So, you’re trying to decide where to go for the 4th of July.
You should travel to Steamboat. Why, you might ask?
Well, the answer for that is: Cowboy Roundup Days. How many places can you experience the west so well? We have cattle drives, ranch rodeos, parades, and block parties.
All in one place: Steamboat Springs, CO.
To make this a bit easier, we’ve highlighted (look for the quote marks) the events on this calendar (from the Steamboat Chamber) that we think would help you experience the wild west the best! Celebrate the 4th, western style!
Friday, June 29th:
- 10am – 4pm: 11th Annual Art on the Mountain – Gondola Square
- 7:30pm Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series – Romick Arena
What is more western than a rodeo? If you’ve never seen a rodeo, then you’re in for a treat. There is roping, bronco and bull riding, barrel racing, clowns, and so much more!
Saturday, June 30th:
- 9am – 2pm: Main Street Farmer’s Market – 6th Street next to the courthouse
- 10am – 3pm: Hahn’s Peak Area Historical Society’s Ice Cream Social and Arts & Crafts Fair
- 10am – 4pm: 11th Annual Art on the Mountain – Gondola Square
- 5pm: Free summer concert series: Dark Star Orchestra – Steamboat Ski Area
- 7:30pm: Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series – Romick Arena
- 8pm: MASS Ensemble with Earth Harp
This amazing concert features a harp that is constructed over the crowd, so the audience feel as if it’s participating. Truly amazing!
Sunday, July 1st:
- 7:30am: Annual Mountain Madness Half Marathon & 10k – Howelson Hill Running Series
- 10am: Cattle Drive – Downtown Main Street
A cattle drive down Main Street. Yes, you heard that right. Lincoln Avenue will be closed, and cows will be herded through the street. Old west at its best!
- 10am – 4pm: 11th Annual Art on the Mountain – Gondola Square
- 12:30pm: Free community day – Strings in the Mountains
- 1pm: Free Ranch Rodeo – Romick Arena
We highly recommend this rodeo. It is very unlike the Pro rodeo, with it’s bronco and bull riding. Instead, it shows what life on a real ranch is like. Cowboys are put into teams, that work on penning, faux branding, even milking a cow. These events speak more to actual chores that take place on a working cattle ranch in Colorado.
Monday, July 2nd:
- 6pm: Open Water Swim
Tuesday, July 3rd:
- 11am: Strings Music Festival: Alison Brown Quartet – Youth Concert
What says wild west better than a banjo? Not much. This bluegrass music will have you clicking your heels in no time!
Wednesday, July 4th:
- 7-10am: Pancake Breakfast: Steamboat Springs Lions Club – Little Toots Park
Need some mighty fine grub? Start your holiday right; grab some hotcakes, and enjoy the great company. All proceeds from this all-you-can eat buffet stay local, and fund scholarships and optical care.
- 9:30am: 6th Annual Cross Country/Nordic Combined Roller Ski Race – Lincoln Avenue
Main street is the place to be from 9:30 on, because the events start one after the other, and everyone’s having a good time. The roller ski race is loads of fun – watch competitors race on rollers, instead of skis.
- 9:40am: 20th Annual Steamboat Sprint – Lincoln Avenue
- 10am: Fourth of July Parade – Main Street – Presented by the Yampa Valley Bank
- 11am – 1pm: Pioneer Day Block Party, featuring a free concert, Routt Beer Floats, free hot dogs, free admission to the museum, kids activies and more – Tread of Pioneers Museum
A block party is the quintessential holiday celebration. Stop by and grab free hot dogs, and explore the museum!
- 12:30pm: Independence Day Ski Jumping Extravaganza, Nordic Combined competition – Howelsen Hill
Yes, ski jumping in July. Howelsen Hill is outfitted with a summer jump, so you can watch winter activities in the sun!
- 6:30pm: Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series – Romick Arena
- 8:30pm: Free concert: 1964…The Tribute – Howelson Hill Ampitheater
This will be one amazing concert! 1964…The Tribute is a cover band for the Beatles, and an excellent one at that. Rolling Stone magazine called them the “Best Beatles Tribute on Earth.” Now that’s a show to see!
Thanks to the Steamboat Chamber for this great calendar!
